Columbia Agar is a culture medium first developed by Ellner and his team from Columbia University in 1966 to optimally support bacterial growth, both with and without the addition of blood. Its modern formulation has been adapted to comply with the Harmonized Method of the 6th edition of the European Pharmacopoeia for the microbiological examination of non-sterile products. This medium is ideal for use in the identification test of Clostridia under anaerobic conditions and is recommended to be supplemented with sterile gentamicin sulfate (20 mg/l) when needed.
